Cornell takes 1st

Cornell took 1st place in yesterday's LPS indoor varsity track meet in the triple jump.

Children

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
1. You spend the first two years of their life teaching them to walk and talk. Then you spend the next sixteen telling them to sit down and shut-up.

2. Grandchildren are God's reward for not killing your own children.

3. Mothers of teens now know why some animals eat their young.

4. Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said.

5. The main purpose of holding children's parties is to remind yourself that there are children more awful than your own.

6. We child proofed our homes, but they are still getting in.

ADVICE FOR THE DAY
Be nice to your kids. They will choose your nursing home.

AND FINALLY:
IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF TENSION AND YOU GET A HEADACHE, DO WHAT IT SAYS ON THE ASPIRIN BOTTLE: "TAKE TWO ASPIRIN" and "KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN"

------------------------------------------------------------------
KIDS ARE LIKE SPONGES
The absorb your knowledge,
They sap your strength,
They soak up your resources
and Drain your energy -
But with one squeeze,
They give it all back.

Guilty Pleasure

I love fries, especially McDonald's fries (for nutrition information go here, which you really don't want to do unless you are like me and trying to stop eating fries). Runza has good fries and Arby's has potato cakes. No fries available, how about Lay's Wavy potato chips with onion dip. Anyone hungr yet? I am.

Crazy life

Today I was at the "Y" with one friend and received a call from another friend. In the course of the conversation I said something to the effect "when life calms down". My friend on the phone said never and my other friend was shaking her head no. I had to laugh because they were right my life will always be a little crazy and busy. I think I actually like it that way. Life would be so boring otherwise.

The Marathoner

This is my DH finishing up a 24.5 mile run on the Mopac trail. David ran out and joined him for the last 50 feet or so. Kurt is planning on running in the Lincoln Marathon in 41 days, 17 hours, 41 minutes, and 42 seconds, so he is training very hard. Here is his training blog, Kurt's Marathon Blog. One of these days I want to hike the Mopac trail (no running, no timing, just a nice hike). Any hikers out there?

The Research Associate

A woman named Emily renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk's office was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation. she hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself. "What I mean is," explained the recorder, "do you have a job, or are you just a . . . ?

"Of course I have a job," snapped Emily. "I'm a Mom."

"We don't list 'Mom' as a occupation 'Housewife' covers it," said the recorder emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like "Official Interrogator" or "Town Registrar."

"What is your occupation?" she probed.

What made me say it, I do not know? The words simply popped out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations."

The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair, and looked up as though she had not heard right. I repeated the title slowly, emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?"

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't), in the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters, (the whole darned family), and already have four credits (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?), and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money."

There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by me glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby), in the child development program, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another Mom."

Motherhood . . . What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door.

Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research Associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations" and great grandmothers Executive Senior Research Associates"? I think so!!! I also think it makes Aunts "Associate Research Assistants."

Trivia #1

This little boy is Dean Stockwell playing Donald Martin in the Gene Kelly / Frank Sinatra 1940's movie "Anchor's Aweigh"

And this is the same Dean Stockwell as Admiral Al Calavicci in the 1980's TV series "Quantum Leap"

See the resemblance?

U.S. Army watch out

Kurt II and Adrienne leave tomorrow for Ft. Hood, Texas. He is going active duty in the U.S. Army. He has been in the reserves for almost two years and decided he wanted to make the Army a career, so he got out of the reserves and signed up full time. We are going to miss them but we are very proud of Kurt. Good luck Kurt II.

Gonna be a bear

In this life I'm a woman. In the next life I'd like to come back a bear. When you're a bear you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that.

Before you hibernate, you're supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that too.

When you're a girl bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you're sleeping and wake to partially grown, cute, cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that.

If you're a mama bear, everyone knows you mean business. You swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them too. I could deal with that.

If you're a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. He EXPECTS that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat.

Yup, gonna be a bear!

The Starfish Story

Adapted from The Star Thrower by Loren Eiseley 1907 - 1977

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"
The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."
"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.
To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die.

"Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"
At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one."

The best waterbottle ever!!!

I have searched high and low for a waterbottle I liked. Some were to big to hold, some were a hastle to drink out of, some dripped and leaked all the time. Finally I came across the Camelbak Water Bottle with "bite valve". With this water bottle you do not have to tilt your head nor do you have to unscrew the cap to drink out of it. You gently bite the "bite valve" and sip (that's right sip, you don't have to suck). The "bite valve" is designed to hold the water at the top of the straw so the water is always waiting for you. Also this water bottle is completely leak proof. I have been using mine for several weeks haven't had a problem and that includes tossing it in my backpack and holding it upside down. It comes in three sizes .5L, .75L, and 1L. I have the .5L because it fits perfectly in my hand. It also comes in up to 13 colors depending on what size you get. I also have a Camelbak hydration pak that I used for the first time yesterday and it is a gem.

Netflix

I got Netflix!!! I can have three DVD's out at a time and keep them as long as I want. Of course if I keep them to long it defeats the purpose of the program because I can check out as many as I want in a month. I will be getting one movie for David/Family, one movie for Mom/Dad and then one TV series. The TV series is my main reason for joining, they have every series that has been released. I can get my favorite series and watch them in order from the beginning. So cool. My first choices are "The Guardian", "ET" and "Quantum Leap" season 1. I have about 70 choices in my queue - mostly TV series.

Daylight Saving Time

Just for the record I do not like daylight saving time. I like the sun coming up early, what can I say I am a morning person. During daylight saving time it is much, much, much harder to get kids to go to bed at a resonable hour - "But mmmooommm, the sun is still up". It is harder for me to get to sleep at a resonable hour but I still have to get up very early. I have to manually reset every clock in the house including my PDA. Since they decided to move DST three weeks early my PDA will not automatically reset unless I download the update. Well with being sick and then my sons reception/going away party yesterday I didn't have time to upgrade. Now I have to reset my PDA today, in three weeks (because then it will automatically update), the last Sunday in October and the first Sunday in November. Maybe if daylight saving time was June - August I wouldn't mind so much. Why do 49 states in the nation recognize DST but not Arizona? The best place I have lived when it comes to the sun and moon shift was the Philippines. They didn't have DST because they didn't need it. The sun came up between 6:00-6:30am and went down between 6:00-6:30pm, year round. Oops, now it is 8:00am (for me 7:00am) and I have lots to do, gotta go.

"The Marching Shovel Soldiers"

David had to do something with the last of the snow from our last storms. Here is his creation. I don't even know where all the snow shovels came from but it was great to have all the teen boys and dad out shoveling at once.

Icky Sicky day 2

Yesterday's feeling better in the afternoon was just a brief reprieve. By the time I had picked up kids I was back in bed with severe chills. I had a comforter and two heavy blankets over me and was still shivering. My DH (who is super sick also) was kind enough to get me some warm water with lemon and honey. It helped a little but then I finally fell asleep. Today the nausea is gone but the body aches are in full force. As soon as I get kids to school it is back to bed. The good thing I am getting a lot of reading done (and yesterday - who wanted to be out on an icky day like it was anyways).

Icky Sicky

Both Kurt and I are sick today. A nasty stomach bug that had us both up during the night doing what you can imagine. We should have seen it coming as David was home Monday and Tuesday with stomach pain (though he only threw up once, early Monday). Right now I am feeling better than I have since the wee hours of the morning so hopefully this is the 24 hour variety and tomorrow will be better.

House of Bauer Bavarian Mints

Bavarian Mints my all time favorite chocolate are back on the market. They were gone for quite a few years now you can get them at Walgreens. They aren't cheap but if I only eat a few a day I can make them last. I guess I need to change my vice below to chocolate.

Seven reasons not to mess with children

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible. The little girl said, "When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah". The teacher asked, "What if Jonah went to hell?" The little girl replied, "Then you ask him".

A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work. As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God." The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like." Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honor" thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?" Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, "Thou shall not kill."

One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head. She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, "Why are some of your hairs white, Mom?" Her mother replied, "Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white." The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, "Momma, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?"

The children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to persuade them each to buy a copy of the group picture. "Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown up and say,'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael, He's a doctor.' A small voice at the back of the room rang out, "And there's the teacher, she's dead."

A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, "Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face." "Yes," the class said. "Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?" A little fellow shouted, "Cause your feet ain't empty."

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: "Take only ONE. God is watching." Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples.

I Love Icicles

The icicle on the left we called the claw. This is from the winter of 2004. It went from our roof all the way to the ground.
The icicle on the right is forming out of our drain spout. It is so cool.

Snow day

A snow day has finally come, all the kids are home. Of course Lincoln Public Schools didn't cancel school until all the universities in the area called off school. David is having fun out in the snow which is 7 inches deep. Heather is also happy because UNL was cancelled.
